![]() Chris is determined to be a good mother, spending all her off days with her. She is devoted to her mother, making clay animals as gifts for her and leaving a rose at her place at the kitchen table each morning. She is described as shy, even diffident, and it is not within her nature to behave aggressively. She is named for the character of the same name in William Shakespeare's King Lear. Regan is caught between her mother's grueling working schedule and the fact that her parents are in the process of an acrimonious divorce (her father is in Europe and is not seen in the film). ![]() Regan MacNeil is a 12-year-old girl and the daughter of actress Chris MacNeil ( Ellen Burstyn). ![]() She was portrayed by Linda Blair in both films and by Geena Davis in the television series. ![]() Regan Teresa MacNeil (born Ap) is a fictional character from William Peter Blatty's horror novel and film adaptation The Exorcist as a supporting character and its first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, and the sequel television series The Exorcist as one of the main protagonists in season one. ![]() This "coming of age" novel is very fast paced and fun for all ages. She is strong and independent and really spreads her wings when she finds out that it's okay not to be "normal". I think she identifies with a majority of teenagers in the fact that she doesn't feel like she fits with the "in crowd". For those who have read the other novels in The Otherworld Series, you can step right back into this world where you know supernatural creatures exist and you can just go along for the ride as Chloe discovers that the world around her is not as "normal" as she thinks.Ĭhloe is a great character to read. Armstrong recaptured her writing style, but for a much younger audience. I absolutely love Armstrong's books and this one's no different. The teenagers in this book, live in the same universe as the characters in The Otherworld Series, but we get a younger perspective of the already familiar world. ![]() ![]() The Summoning is Kelley Armstrong's (author of The Otherworld Series) debut young adult series book. ![]() ![]() ![]() I wish people would learn to be more skeptical about what they read, and do at least some remedial fact checking before blindly recirculating the garbage. A lot of it starts on Facebook and Twitter, and is abused by people from the President on down. It used to be mainly just an AOL disease, and was somewhat isolated because AOL users didn't know about the internet at large, but now it spreads everywhere. It really illustrates the dirty underbelly of social media, and how so many people repost things without any thought as to whether it's true. A lot of the story was about social media, and a campaign of "fake news" against Gamache, claiming he was evil and incompetent, with doctored videos to document his crimes. ![]() There was a lot going on in this one, and not everything was really tied together. ![]() ![]() ![]() How could I not love a guy who saves dying people in the desert by bringing them a Big Mac and has the fashion sense of a blind Brony Hair Metal Band? We also get glimpses into the mind of my favorite character, Lassiter. There is significant world-building that will direct future books in all of the connected series. Judging the book apart from her, I really loved it. Not, you know, fucked her.īut, you know, not my monkey not my circus. As soon as the hero figured out what she was hiding he should have gotten her to a psychiatric hospital. However, it is very clear that she had a psychotic break right before the story began, and all of her actions are being directed by the broken psyche of a delusional person. This is a tough book to rate because, yes, I hated the heroine of the story as much as most reviewers. ![]() ![]() ![]() We just have to keep our heads in the game and our eyes on the prize, to make it to the end zone, before one last tackle takes us down for good. Except, it feels like as soon as we make it past one obstacle, there’s an even bigger one waiting for us. I didn’t think I was made for relationships, thought something inside me was broken, but I want it all with him. It’s the other stuff, the way he makes my pulse race and my heart swell, that’s throwing me for a loop. I’m not one to stress about being into a man for the first time. If it was just my newly discovered bisexuality, that’d be one thing. ![]() Whether it’s on our calls or when he flies to Atlanta, we talk about everything, lying awake together half the night. All I know is, months later, my days aren’t complete until we tell each other good night. I still can’t say how it happened, how a random decision to strike up a conversation with Jeremy turned into…whatever this is. ![]() When I head back to California, I expect our chats to end, but I couldn’t be more wrong. Darren is a full-steam-ahead kind of guy, and one talk leads to hanging out, swapping phone numbers, and pranking West and Anson while they’re on their honeymoon. ![]() Strangely, at West’s wedding, I find myself confiding in Darren, the straight, confirmed bachelor and star quarterback of the Atlanta Lightning. My divorce, which was amicable, followed. Seeing my best friend West, happy with his fiancé opened my eyes to things I’ve been missing in my own marriage. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the mystery can be enjoyed by any reader, this series will be that much more fun to read for kids who are simultaneously learning about ancient Rome, as they will understand references to place names, rulers (like Vespasian and Titus, his successor), and events. Though the story is fictional, the historical events in this book occur as they really happened. ![]() Parents and teachers will want to use their discretion when suggesting this book to specific readers. Some of these scenes would definitely be too graphic for a fourth or fifth grader, even though the reading level and characters would be a perfect fit. Beheaded dogs are described in detail, and some of the children witness a brutal suicide. Girls are routinely rounded up on the streets and sold into slavery. ![]() Lupus, the young boy who is mute, has had his tongue cut from his mouth. Interestingly, and unexpectedly, this book is considerably darker and more violent than the front cover on either the paperback or hardcover edition suggests. Readers will feel at home with the characters, which in turn, will help them become invested in the historical details intertwined with the plot. The dialogue is written very informally, and the way the characters interact with one another is similar to the way tween friendships are portrayed in novels set in the present day. ![]() Despite the ancient setting, the writing in this book has a strong contemporary vibe. ![]() ![]() Which may in part be why I feel let down, but more likely it’s that Mack is just a little too messy for me. Then Mack meets actor Finlay on set, and the world turns upside down again and Mack finds himself wishing he could be a little more like Fin, but what does this mean for his relationship with Karim? But when Mack’s father takes a new directing project in Scotland, Mack has to move away and soon discovers how painful a long distance relationship can be. He’s also had a crush on Karim for the longest time and can’t quite believe it when Karim seems to like him too. ![]() “I accept myself unconditionally, right now.”įifteen-year-old Mack is a hopeless romantic, probably thanks to growing up on film sets with his director father. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Her fanfics focus on bringing together Simon and his “evil” adversary Baz in a relationship that the original books didn’t fulfil. In Fangirl, a college-aged girl writes alternative fanfics for a series of seven books based on a male hero, Simon Snow. This book series stemmed from another novel written by Rainbow Rowell called Fangirl. Chosen ones, prophecies, ‘magick’ wands, a co-ed school for the magickally inclined in England… The similarities aren’t lost on the reader, and they are not a coincidence. ![]() While being LGBTQ-friendly reads, these books tell a story that is suspiciously similar to some of J. In this case, I feel comfortable instructing readers to judge the book by its cover, as nothing is lacking in the artwork that doesn’t convey the playful, feel-good sentiment that this novel imparts on the reader. ![]() Each cover features colourful depictions of the main characters, Simon Snow and Basilton (Baz) Grimm-Pitch. You may have seen the latter on the front display at Coles in the Avalon Mall. The series contains three books, Carry On, Wayward Son, and Any Way The Wind Blows. For any readers looking for a break from heavy and convoluted material, Rainbow Rowell’s Simon Snow series provides a lighthearted, diverse twist on a saturated genre. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Li (Tiny Reparations)īest Paperback Original: Or Else, by Joe Hart (Thomas & Mercer)Īlso nominated: Quarry’s Blood, by Max Allan Collins (Hard Case Crime) On a Quiet Street, by Seraphina Nova Glass (Graydon House) Cleopatra’s Dagger, by Carole Lawrence (Thomas & Mercer) and A Familiar Stranger, by A.R.
